The course approaches the topic through pivotal problems and questions which all human beings have had to solve and how Americans did so – questions such as how to use our environment to solve problems; what our rights are; the proper role of government; and contact with foreign civilizations. The course begins by establishing the geography of the continent first, since this is the board on which history is played out after humans arrive. The course then proceeds through the arrival of the first humans, colonization, and the major changes in America up to modern times. Methods include use of the Miro Board for interactive activities; reading vital classical works; Socratic discussion; and a great deal of guided research on student topics of interest. This section of the course is age-appropriate for ages 10 to 12.
